Supporting Messages from local & International Delegates for 2nd International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility Official Launching Ceremony, Penang, Malaysia on 29th May 2004

From the supporting delegates and AU family members of Malaysia:

Dear readers,

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you very much for taking your time to read these long and meaningful supporting messages which we have specially compiled for your perusal.

The reason we have compiled all the supporting messages is to present them to the local and international press reporters that we actually have the international delegates and AU family support to organise the CSR Conference in Penang, Malaysia. We are ready and able to organize this international Conference in a very successful way. This is just a kind of support shown by Ansted University and my network contacts globally to acknowledge our efforts. It also gives many people a chance to express their feeling towards CSR objectives and its meaning to them.

We are unable to get all the foreign delegates or all the local delegates as well as Ansted University family members to come to attend the CSR International Conference Launching ceremony in Penang hence by using supporting messages it is the ideal way to show it to everyone that this CSR International Conference has been acknowledged by many people around the world. Indeed the supporting messages give the Organising & Scientific Committee members more encouragement and motivation, to making the 2nd CSR International Conference an interesting and a lasting memory in the delegates mind. The motto of this CSR Conference is also to play an important role to promote PEACE through Social Responsibility.

On behalf of the Organising and Scientific Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to thank those delegates, friends, AU Alumni & family members for sending their messages of support and to give encouragement to us although they could not attend the 2nd CSR International Conference launching ceremony on 29th May at Equatorial Hotel in Penang, Malaysia. The launching event was very well planned and organized  successfully.

This is the advantage of an open heart sharing and greetings, you can see so many people have taken their times and efforts to pen and share their messages with us too. Also through this compilation of messages, we can learn more from others as well. We are promoting WORLD PEACE through Social Responsibility activities. I hope you will agree with me. If you still have more messages to share, please do so.  We trust that more and more messages will be coming on the way even after the launching ceremony is over. This is a kind of teamwork spirit and culture has exemplified in  Ansted family.

“The CSR’s logo was created by one of our Organising Committee members, Mr Alfred Phua. The CSR’s logo depicts the outline of four human beings signifying the family unit as a metaphor for the larger society. Is not the family unit, in whatever form or variation, the key to a larger society? Are not men, women and children the irreplaceable building blocks of society and the human race? Has not mankind, by virtue of his superior intelligence and God-given soul and conscience, been given responsible stewardship over this world and must responsibly govern this world in order to always preserve it for an innumerable succession of generations and generations to come?”

Ansted University is extremely proud indeed to have its own  logo placed next to the logo for Corporate Social Responsibility as this represents the greatest, the most ideal contribution to mankind and the world that Ansted could achieve through the fields of education, training, the quest for knowledge and expertise, research and human development and the search for lasting peace through social responsibility. Thank you for your support given to us.  Have a nice day.

Some useful points written by Dr. Goh Kum Guan, CSR Conference Organising Committee Team Leader, Ansted Alumni and Honorary Advisory Council member

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

CSR has suddenly become a bye word for progressive thinking, innovation and enlightened self-interest. It presents a whole new vehicle through which business can express its new found values, beliefs and responsibilities. As we have seen, this has the potential for powerful strategic gains in terms of reputation and in a number of other ways besides.

Competitive advantage of CSR

Enhance stakeholder relationship with community

Opportunities to be at the table with key influences

Strong image & reputation

Social license to operate

Positive balance in goodwill trust

Unique Selling Point

Ansted University has been organising various and many unique interactive seminars in the past years both in Malaysia and abroad since 1999. The main purpose is to design to help delegates and keen learners to acquire knowledge in Science & Technology, Engineering & Environmental Sciences, Medicine and Healthcare, Historic  & Linguistics, Liberal Arts & Culturel Psychology & Philosophy. In that case it will help participants stand above the others and become  more effective and persuasive leader in their field. Our experts provide participants with the tools necessary to truly understand the current environment and analyse how they can position themselves and their organisation to effectively meet new challenges.  We are inviting 1000 delegates to attend this International Conference and some of them have agreed to present their papers and share their expertise in various fields. Through shared values and learning, participants will be able to transform ideas strategically to build the trust and goodwill of the communities in which they operate. If harnessed to its fullest extent, it is a vehicle for pro-actively seeking out means of being an agent for positive social change and demonstrating values through real actions, which may eventually be used as a unique selling point.

In today's world, where ideas are increasingly displacing old values in the production of economic value, competition for reputation becomes a significant driving force, propelling our economy forward. Many companies incorporate CSR as a marketing tool to build the trust and goodwill of the communities in which they operate by implies a kind of benevolence or 'giving back' to the society.

Case Studies

Take Coca-Cola's demonstration of 'compliance-plus' in India when it volunteered its distribution network to the benefit of many vaccination programmes. As a consequence Coca-Cola was able to spread its distribution network across India by acting as a force for good. People got their coke and their vaccinations! As creative and as pragmatic a business solution as you'll see and when communicated effectively, as compelling a corporate communication as you'll come across.

London-based Diageo plc reported that between 1994 and 1998, 22 cause-related marketing projects helped it raise $600,000 for causes while increasing sales of tracked brands by 17 per cent.

A recent study by Interbrand concluded that a full one-quarter of the world's total financial wealth is tied up in intangible assets such as reputation, brand equity, strategic positioning, alliances, knowledge and the like.

Nike provides a compelling case in point, "Nike suffered significant damage to its brand and its sales when it was exposed as having poor labour standards in its supply chain. Similarly, it has benefited by embracing the cause of improving labour standards in the supply chain, and by publicising its efforts to certify compliance with labour standards throughout its supply chain."

“I am in the repair and warranty business and I wish to differentiate my company from competition by positioning ourselves as an environmental friendly organization. So this CSR concept is very important to me.” By Mr. EH Ooi, Business Development Director – Asia, A Divison of Jabil Circuit Sdn. Bhd., Jabil Global Services (Penang)

Supporting Messages from International delegates and AU family members

“Greetings from Dana. Thanks for sharing the inspiring message from YB Dato' Koay Kar Huah and the other delegates' messages with me.  Roger Haw, I sincerely appreciate your thoughtfulness. I am highly impressed with you and your Organising Committee members in Malaysia for the outstanding work in regards to the Official launching of the 2nd International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility to be held in Penang on 29th May 2004, the University's Social Responsibility Award, and the International Journal for Social Responsibility. Also I wish all of you a very wonderful and a very successful launching ceremony at the world-class Equatorial Hotel in Penang. As President of Ansted University's Scientific Board, I am very proud of you and congratulate all of you on your great effort and excellent work / progress devoted to the University's upcoming bsp; Highest & Best Regards

Hi Roger Haw!  Congratulations on your very wonderful and very successful CSR International Conference launching ceremony in Penang.  That is Great News!  I (as President of Ansted University's Scientific Board) highly appreciate and sincerely thank you and everyone involved for their great effort and outstanding work, which resulted in an excellent ceremony.  I am very proud of all of you. Also thanks for sharing the very interesting and very informative supporting messages with me.” By Prof. Dr Dana M. Barry, Ph.D., C.P.C. CAMP Technical Writer, President of Ansted University's Scientific Board (USA)

“I hope that the 2nd International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility Launch Ceremony goes well on 29th May at Equatorial Hotel Penang. I have put all the supporting messages on the website. It will help to build interest for the conference itself. Already several thousand people have looked at the conference details on the website. Now people are starting to ask me about attending and about presenting papers. The brochure is excellent. It will promote the conference well I think. The Journal-CD-rom itself is excellent. I like the way the material is presented. And I like the way it starts with a video speech from Roger Haw. It would be nice to do this kind of thing every time but to have someone different giving the speech - this would show the international diversity of the journal. But I think that it is a good start to the journal. And the conference is starting to look good. I think that I am in a privilege position and so I have an obligation to help others who are less fortunate. It is a pity that not everyone understands that obligations go along with privileges - if they did then there would be no such thing as war or exploitation. So Ansted and its message of peace is extremely important.” By Prof. David Crowther, Ansted University Honorary Doctorate Degree Recipient, Advisory Council member cum External Professor, 2nd CSR Conference Scientific Committee, London Metropolitan University (U.K)

“Indeed it is a deep and emotive pleasure for me to express to you my profound happiness for the launching ceremony on 29th May at Equatorial Hotel in Penang, Malaysia for promoting the Second International Conference on Corporative Social Responsibility, Ansted Social Responsibility International Award & Social Responsibility International Journal, because the transcendental interest in the future of humankind, it is, for tolerance, education, promoting human, moral,  political rights and human virtues. Nowadays, the global society of our planet, in such virtual circumstances, need institutions as the ANSTED UNIVERSITY, promoting discussions and advancements with international specialists in the area of social responsibilities, in political, economic, social, environmental, human and moral areas. I send you and you organizers my  congratulations, and full support.

Many thanks for sharing with me Ansted family members messages received from the friends of the ANSTED UNIVERSITY. Deeply proud to belong to Ansted University, I hope in the near future to help more than now. The Ansted University objectives are  necessary in our world, there are education, tolerance, responsibility and peace. Others such as environment, to which I dedicate my efforts, social, economic and political are also important targets of the University, all of them interconnect themselves. Those objectives will give a brilliant and prestigious social future to  Ansted University because all people in our planet  need  them.” By Acad. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bartolome Ribas-Ozonas , Counsel, Area of Toxicology, The Royal National Academy of Pharmacy (Spain)

There is no better place than Malaysia  (appreciated by many countries as a country of very dynamic economics and still more and more achievements not only in industries, IT and architecture). Indeed I love your country very much. It is really very good to select Malaysia as the host country for this international Conference, this important, interdisciplinary meeting of Scientists, Researchers, entrepreneurs, and practitioners -with so dynamic and internationally recognized expert and excellent managers like Mr. E K Haw and his dynamic team leaders as well as all the active Committee members. “Congratulations on holding the 2nd International Conference and workshop to promote CSR globally! I'd like to extend my personal respect to your Organising Committee commendable efforts to open this significant event in Asia. I believe that this will surely build a stepping-stone to help companies improve CSR practices globally.  It is generally said that business can leverage the CSR to strengthen the business platform through  risk and reputation management. But we always have to keep in our mind that companies must help address social issues through  CSR practices. This can lead to sustainability of both society and companies on  a win-win basis.” By Mr. Hitoshi Suzuki Senior Manager Corporate Social Contributions and CSR Communications of NEC Corporation (Japan)

“Greetings to all participants in the 2nd CSR International Conference Official Launching ceremony in Penang and my best wishes for a successful event. In today’s world, CSR is rapidly coming to the fore as a vital aspect of business conduct. The successful businesses of the future will be those that recognise their responsibilities to the societies in which they operate and thereby make social awareness an organic part of their activities. CSR is an idea whose time has certainly come. Ansted University is an institution that has consistently led from the front in promoting CSR through its participation in global CSR initiatives such as this one, as well as integrating CSR into its overall humanitarian mission. The success of Ansted University proves that a socially responsible institution will attract wide support and play its part in the cause of promoting peace and enhanced co-operation between nations.” By Professor Dr John Kersey, Honorary Member of Advisory Council, Honorary Representative for the UK, Ansted University Honorary Doctorate Degree recipient (U.K)

“I congratulate Ansted University and its Organising Committee on its organization of the Corporate Social Responsibility conference launching ceremony in Penang on 29th May 2004. A sense of corporate social responsibility is a feature of a genuinely ‘civilized’ society, and a potentially immensely powerful force for the good of humanity. I wish the CSR Conference every success in furthering this important cause. I am sure the conference will be a great success. Please do not hesitate to request my assistance at any time. Also thank you for sending me the CSR Conference brochure and Social Responsibility International journal. It is obviously very well organised and planned. Congratulations!” By Dr. Robert J. I am pleased to send this message and congratulate the Conference Organising Committee for your remarkable educational activities and the Ansted University essential contribution to keep education at a high standard, helping all level of people to study. I wish your launching ceremony on the 29th May, success.” By Prof. Renos Kousoulides, President of the London EuroCollege DEC University.

“Roger Haw, it is always a delight to hear from you and the way you and your Conference Organising Committee carry the torch for democratic freedom and the security of the world.  You will be aware that Prof. Dr. Rodny and I are fully backing your great crusade for Corporate Social Responsibility.  Many years ago I highlighted the devastating consequences of multi-national corporations on the world economy who build up the hopes of the people and leave them beached on the sands of economic ruin and instability.  You will also be aware that as a public operator I gave a speech at UCLA in California on March 21 1998 about the unacceptable exploitation of Africa by greedy western corporations that have destroyed the ecology of countries like Nigeria and profited at the expense of the people.  My message for the conference is this.  The class barriers have been eroded away gradually, but the champions of the underprivileged have lost their supporters so it is time now for those involved in Corporate Social Responsibility to be the new champions of the people and bring about a safer stronger world economy that fosters equal opportunities for all.” BY PROFESSOR SIR DANIEL GRIMALDI FRSA, CHANCELLOR OF SOUTHERN EASTERN UNIVERSITY (USA)

“Both Dr. Baruch Levy and I would be willing to participate in the conference and present the Israeli experience in social responsibility. As you might know, Israel is considered to be very advanced in this field. The problem, as you know, is that Israelis are not welcome to Malaysia and I do not think we can get entry visa to your beautiful country. Likewise, your passports hold the phrase “valid to all countries except Israel”. Please let us know if it would be possible for you to talk with your friends at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to get us entry visa. Major General (ret.) Dr. Levy joins me in wishing you Best Wishes”  By Dr. Joseph Shevel , President of Galillee College (Isreal)

“I deem it an honour to be associated with this noble event of the launching ceremony of the 2nd CSR international conference in Malaysia. I wish I could be at the ceremony personally to render my support for the event and to inspire others to equally wake up from their slumber to support the same. At the time that Malaysia is championing the cause of corporate social responsibility (csr) towards the society and the environment, it is only imperative that all stakeholders in the corporate sector and the corporate social responsibility advocacy to support the upcoming international conference on csr in Malaysia. Asia is a haven for corporate bodies with Malaysia no exception. Asia believes in social responsibility and having the conference on this subject matter is not by chance. It is quite timely! To me, support and commitment towards corporate social responsibility starts with supporting the 2nd international conference on csr in Malaysia. I wish to express my profound support and association with the launching ceremony and calls all stakeholders to share this vision.” By George Appiagyei Oppong, Chief Operating Officer, Youth Development Foundation Executive Secretary, Defence for Children International, (Ghana), PhD student of Ansted University.

“I remember very well the last year's CSR conference held in London, at the London Metropolitan University, just prior to the Ansted University Convocation ceremony during which I was awarded the degree of "Doctor of Homeopathy and Naturology - Honoris Causa" by the Ansted University. It was a remarkable event of lasting memory. I am sure the 2nd CSR International Conference in Malaysia will also be a remarkable event, full of success, imparting a lot of updated knowledge to all participants, for the betterment of the people of many countries of the world. My warmest congratulations, dear Prof. Dr. Sir Roger Haw and the Organising as well as the Scientific Committee for organizing this event and I wish all of you a full success.” By Sir Prof. Dr. Luildo M. de Noronha, President of FENAMAN-Portugal and APH-Portugal, Director of IDH-Lisbon and Goa. (Portugal)

“Many congratulations to Ansted International University Asia Regional Service Center in Malaysia on holding the 2nd CSR conference. Corporate Social Responsibility is indeed an area that needs urgent attention as it defines the collective thinking of an organisation and reflects the morals and ideals that it upholds. I hope that such conferences will raise the necessary awareness not only amongst Corporate but also individuals who will then demand appropriate responsible behaviour from the organisations. May the event this year be even more successful than the first one held in England last year.” By Ms. Vineeta Dixit, Ansted Honorary Advisory Council member (India)

“I am delighted that Ansted University Asia Regional Service Center in Malaysia is organising 2nd CSR International Conference in Penang of such global interest. Social tensions are no doubt ultimate cause of all misery and should be eliminated from the fabric of our society. This is a very opportune time to discuss  this in all its aspects. I wish you all the best and I am sure this will be a successful effort.” By Prof. Dr. Jitendra Behari, Ansted Honorary Advisory Council member, Ansted University Honorary Doctorate Degree recipient and Professor of Environmental Sciences of Jawaharlal Nehru University (India)

“Thanks for sending me Social Responsibility: an International Journal (CD-rom) published by Ansted University Asia Regional service Center in Malaysia. I am happy to learn that my fellow colleagues from Malaysia are organizing the 2nd CSR International Conference to promote social responsibility. The memories of the first CSR International Conference are still alive in the museum of our mind. I have no doubts whatsoever that this gathering is going to be memorable again. The reason for the expected success of even your second conference is peace.  In order to achieve a stable peace, it is imperative for the citizens of the world to realize that laws and responsibilities go together.  Without peace there cannot be progress.  All the Organising & Scientific Committee members are deserved commendations for your serious work to promote peace through education and CSR projects.” By Dr. Stephen Gill, Ansted Poet Laureat, Doctorate Degree recipient and Advisory Council member (Canada)

“Greetings. Thank you for the 2nd International Conference Organising and Scientific Committee for keeping me informed.    I believe CSR is in its infancy stage but it is gaining ground with growth. In fact, what there is a determination and a dedication to tackle both environmental and societal matters.  This suggests that CSR is becoming a corporate goal and if firms are to function effectively in our society, then; it seems reasonable to expect them to contribute more to the quality of life than just supplying goods and services. Firms have to adapt to CSR and be prepared to assume a broader responsibility to society than ever before. I wish all of you have a successful launching ceremony in Penang. With best regards.” Prof. Abdulrazzak Charbaji, Ph.D With best regards” By Dr. Abdul Razzak Charbaji

“Congratulations on the launching ceremony of 2nd CSR international conference to be held in Malaysia on 29th May 2004. May I present a paper for the Conference in order to support the meaningful international meeting Look forward to seeing more information from you. Best regards” By Dr. Chen-Fong Wu, Chairman of Dep. Business Administration of Providence University in Taiwan

“The conference organised by Ansted University and its foundation will not only offer academics the opportunity to interact with an international consortia of fellow academics but just as importantly enable us to learn more about current research being carried out on Corporate Social Responsibility whilst enjoying the renowned Malaysian hospitality. I anticipate that the wide array of topics to be reviewed. It will indeed transcend the usual parameters of subject areas. Needless to add that it is indeed with eagerness that I await the Corporate Social Responsibility Conference. I have no doubt that the conference will be a resounding success for Ansted University, its associates and Penang. Good luck with the organisation and with the preparation stages. See you all soon in Penang” By Ms. Diana Luck, Visiting Lecturer of London Metropolitan University (U.K)

I shall certainly send another greetings message, congratulating you on the success you have achieved in organizing the CSR Conference launching function. Can I suggest to you to compile all the greetings messages you have received so far into a mini-book and circulate its copies among the delegates at the 2nd CSR Conference and that would enhance the prestige of the conference. I sincerely assure you will always have me by you. With my kind regards and best wishes. Sincerely yours” By Dr. Bhaskar Roy Barman, Ansted Honorary Advisory Council member (India)

“We human beings are at the most crucial turning point of civilization. We of course welcome the technological revolution and day-to-day development of science. But it seems that we are losing many things like ethics, social and human values, our culture and wisdom. I believe widely culture is the key of development. Presently to match with technology we are moving apart from human society and culture that is "live on letting others to live". This is our responsibility. Internet connectivity has now fragmented us from our social and cultural lives. Individualism cannot not facilitate culture and development. Therefore, social responsibility is a big issue of the present time.  I am very much pleased to know that a cd-rom on "Social Responsibility:an International Journal"  is going to be launched on 29th May published by Ansted University Asia Regional Service Center that would be considered as the best practice in keeping with the times. I would like to welcome this novel initiative and trust Ansted University Asia Regional Service Center will continue this initiative for the new generation.  Thanks” By Prof. Dr. Sultan Muhammad Razzak, Executive Director Forum for Culture and Human Development Bangladesh, Ansted Alumni and External Professor (Bangladesh)

“The staff and management of the Pacific International University, together with all the members of the Board of Governors, wishes to congratulate the Conference Organising and Scientific Committee for organising the 2nd CSR International Conference in Malaysia. “I have come across your message just now and hasten to send following message, which I hope may reach you in time for your Program designed for the 2nd CSR International Conference launching ceremony on May 29. It gives me a great pleasure to be invited to extend a supporting message to the forthcoming launching ceremony for the promotion of the 2nd CSR International Conference in Malaysia. It is now a common knowledge that the future of the green Earth may need concerted efforts of mankind to preserve the environment, and that a citizen, being a stakeholder of any organized institution such as a corporate, may do something positive toward the end.  CSR is mostly incorporated into the corporate strategy and management to survive, while SRI tends to respond to social needs of CSR as a useful means with quantitative analysis of sustainable improvements. I have every confidence in the success of Ansted projects, which may bring forth a fruit of wisdom from discussions and listening to other stakeholders.” By Respectfully, Dr. M.A. OKA Honorary Advisory Council Member (Japan)

“I wish to congratulate you for launching the 2nd CSR International Conference in Malaysia. Ansted University has always been successful in every such event yet I am convinced that success will follow you in all the ways you step. No doubt this is already successful, the Saturday launching ceremony will be an important ceremony in Penang for those CSR keen learners and researchers. It is a great pleasure to see our colleagues Roger Haw and David Crowther for developing such prorammes. I understand that such a conference needs hard work and multiplying efforts in order to reach this auspicious moment of launching it. Of course, I would like to extend my appreciation to the entire Organising and Scientif Committee globally.  The 29th day of May 2004, will be a very memorable day in the history of Ansted University. Malaysian must be very proud of such organisers frequently as Ansted University pursues very attractive and valuable ceremonies in different national and international locations. GOD BLESS YOU” By Prof. Dr Jeev (Mauritius), Ansted Honorary Doctorate Degree recipient cum External Professor

“I am pleased to be invited by the Ansted University Asia Regional Service Centre in Malaysia to send my message World Peace – a Social Responsibility. I congratulate Ansted University and its Foundation as well as the entire Organising team in Malaysia for initiating such an important issue. I believe education is the Master Key, which opens all doors of Human Civilization. More education means more civilization and a better world. Better-education minds understand better that without peace there cannot be proper civilization. Educational Institutions should make teaching social responsibility a core practice in education so that young people develop the convictions and skills needed to shape a safe, sustainable, democratic, and just world. West Cost University and its associated institutions work internationally to enhance human minds to understand the fruits of Peace. In this World, there cannot be any peace without peace and as such we the educators and the educational institutions should work to educate human minds to develop conviction among our students to help develop peace in this Planet, known as Earth. Best Wishes” By Prof. Sarfraz Lloyd, President of West Coast University, (Republic of Panama, Central America)

Malaysia.  However, it is indeed a privilege and honour to send you a message of support to the noble mission of Ansted University whose name says it all. Also, without the indefatigable leadership of its founding member Prof. Dr Roger Haw  for his vision to the road ahead in the  21st Century and with modern technology , it is now possible for any  citizen in the world to get a good education which in itself is the most excellent training and development in Social Responsibility. Well Dr Roger Haw, our mission ahead is to make this vision a reality and to make this world a better place to live in dignity and respect in our United Nations family. “With all my pleasure I quote below my supporting message for the 2nd CSR International Conference in Malaysia:  Peaceful coexistence, and humanitarian spirit, must constitute the principal elements of Life for all the people in the world. “I would really like to attend the 2nd CSR International Conference in November and I am going to try my best to do that. As ever in peace and friendship” By Ms. Irene Sharkey (Canada)

“Roger Haw, How nice it is to hear from you that you and your colleagues took my messages seriously and made the action so promptly! Several similar organizations are there in UN and North America, but I think the best one is IPPC (European Integrated pollution Prevention and Control) I hope that CSR contributes to prevent environmental pollution. It is my pleasure to send this supporting message to the participants on the 2nd CSR International Conference Launching Ceremony on 29th May in Penang, Malaysia. Also to all delegates from various countries who will be attending the 2nd International Conference and Workshop on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on November, in Penang, Malaysia, 2004. I heard that the event is deemed to promote, encourage, and advocate a greater sense of social responsibility towards society, the environment, and to ensure a better future for mankind. As well documented many people in the world are suffering from chronic exposure to several chemicals (environmental toxins) discharged from cars, industries, wars and several other sources, and man-made ozone, as result of a chemical reaction with those exhausts and emissions, causing allergic diseases such as asthma, and malignant diseases in several organs. We also cannot overlook the threats to many chemicals in water such as mercury, a potent neurotoxin, which can cause irreversible damage to the brain, cardiovascular system, and kidneys in adults, in addition to reducing fertility. Mercury poisoning in man is well known as Minamata disease (MD), which is methyl mercury poisoning that occurred in humans who ingested fish and shellfish contaminated by methyl mercury discharged in waste water from a chemical plant (Chisso Co. Ltd.).MD was first officially "discovered" in 1956 in Minamata City, south-west region of Japan's Kyushu Island. The marine products in Minamata Bay displayed high levels of Hg contamination (5.61 to 35.7 ppm). Dr M.Harada reported that the numbers of chronic MD patients who manifested symptoms gradually over an extended period of time was still on the increase in Japan and also in the world. How can we prevent these threats of man-made environmental pollution? There are several organizations, which aim to prevent these threats. For instance, the EU has a set of common rules on permitting for industrial installations. These rules are set out in the so-called IPPC, Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control. In essence, the IPPC Directive is about minimizing pollution from various point sources throughout the EU. In EU, over the last decades tremendous improvements have been achieved in industry regarding several major polluting substances. It said that exactly the same rules apply to all 15 'old' EU countries and 'new' Member States (Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and Latvia). Back to Asian countries we still do not have such organizations. I think this is the time to establish a similar corporate machine in Asian countries. I do hope that CSR contributes to promote and assist to establish such an organization in Malaysia first and then in all other Asian counties for humans and other species to survive in our irrecoverable planet.” By Prof. Dr. Koki Shimoji, M.D., PhD, FRCA; Founding member of Ansted University Medical School, Ansted University Honorary Doctorate Degree Recipient, Professor Emeritus, Niigata University Graduate School of Medicine; Professor, Ube Frontier University Graduate School of Human Sciences (Japan)

“I am very pleased to offer my congratulations on the work of Ansted University Asia Regional Service Centre in organizing an international conference in Penang, Malaysia, as part of its strategic civic objectives to promote peace through corporate social responsibility globally.

Malaysia is taking a positive step forward. As Malaysia encourages and advocates among corporations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, a greater sense of social responsibility towards society, and in general our environment, we hear the voice of ‘Hope’ in a global forum.  Hope is needed to ensure a better future for all human kind and the rest of the world.   Thank you Malaysia and Ansted University! This special thanks also goes to Prof. Dr Roger Haw, Founding member of Ansted University, BVI of U.K

International conferences and workshops such as 2nd CSR International Conference scheduled for Penang, Malaysia 2004, are the way of the future. It is through meeting with one another at these kinds of events that we will better understand how our ideologies and our economies, together with our social practices and principles unite individuals, and corporate bodies as citizens of our lovely planet Earth.  They help us see and appreciate the complex forces that are shaping the 21st century and our local and global economy.

I too believe that corporations need to participate in the responsibilities of building a healthy society. The economy is basically about providing work for human beings so that we can live and experience a sense of well-being.  Work is also an integral part of our living standards; so are state-run services. However, many states no longer provide these services and more states are reducing these services.  Frequently the income derived from wage earnings alone is not enough to sustain families nor in many cases individuals.  Large families, single parent families, and our elders are the ones who suffer most from the loss of state provided services.  If the state is no longer providing the types of services needed by its citizens, then who will provide these services? Some may say that each individual is responsible for his or her own fortune. But this perspective does not recognize that we are not all equally equipped to do this.

After the devastation of World War II, our world leaders were much more concerned with giving hope to people that a better world…a better life… for all was possible.  I think so-called ‘Welfare states’ were developed so that people would be free from want and would be provided the services and benefits needed for their well-being.  Unfortunately since then things have changed a great deal.

Since the 1970s many of the welfare states were reorganized according to the new conservatism that placed more importance on making profits and being successful than on providing hope for a better tomorrow, through state intervention, especially to those disadvantaged.  Things have changed even more with the new technologies that provide for faster communication and transfer of monies across borders. There is much concern even in Canada over the rapid pace of the globalization of national economies. And with the reorganization of former communist states into the world capitalist economy, corporations have become an increasingly complex partner in the development of economic policies and trade agreements.  So we are looking for better responses to our problems and concerns not only in economic terms, but also in terms of social policies and programs.

Indeed Globalization is a challenge, but I think it offers a dynamic challenge to the world – to our leaders in government and in business – and to our citizens. These changes open up space for a transformation of our society, no matter where we live.  Your conference will help the world to do that…to build a better tomorrow.

From your Press release Ansted University must be quite pleased to invite international discussion on current economic realities combined with the complex issue of social responsibility.  What is possible? What can be hoped for?  If we remember our histories, we will recognize these global forces as forces constructed from the actions of human beings and thus under the control of human beings.  I think your conference will do much good.

Ansted University Asia Regional Service Center International Conference and the Workshop in Penang, Malaysia is to promote Corporate Social Responsibility globally. You are taking a big step in discussing these concerns.  Perhaps not all corporate leaders are only after money.  Perhaps they too see that social responsibility includes many things including being able to respond adequately to realities faced by individuals such as fear and anxiety over loss of jobs, unfair labour practices, absence of labour laws and standards, and degradation of the environment. On the other hand even countries and states dread the shock and fear that comes from knowing and experiencing enormous amounts of financial capital and then loosing it.

We have seen that globalization is not one thing - it has both positive and negative characteristics that need to be better understood.  Eastern countries like yours, surely can better understand the experiences of Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia and thus can inform the global debate. Together, with representatives from 60 countries from around the world, from universities, from non-government organizations and from multinational corporations, both you and your participants will have the opportunity to explore how to make profits by being mindful of local as well as global economic and social realities. I have faith and hope in your work Roger Haw.

In closing, I send my sincere congratulations on the launch of your exciting venture and hope for the emergence perhaps of a different economic model  - maybe there is one that can respond in a fair and deliberate manner to our social and economic needs at the local and global levels.  I wish you all the best in your endeavours to do the world good.” By Irene Sharkey, ENERI and Associates Education Consultants (Canada)

“I am sure the 2nd International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility Launching Ceremony on 29th May at Equatorial Hotel in Penang, Malaysia, was a great success, as will be the Conference. It is nice to know that institutions as the Ansted University are taking care of the organisation of this kind of events.” Dr. Esther Ortiz, University of Murcia (Spain)

“Corporate Social Responsibility is inter disciplinary by nature. Social Responsibility in my opinion cannot belong to any exclusive academic domain. The series of conferences initiated by Professor David Crowther of London Metropolitan University and Dr. Roger Haw of Ansted University is pioneering work in this field as it provides a platform for academics, professionals and social workers from all over the world, to exercise, their opinions as to the broad ' definitions' of CSR augmented by its inherent multi disciplinary character. As a practitioner of Distance Education, I personally am attracted to such an episteme.

I wish the ensuing conference in Penang, and all future conferences a huge success.” Dr. A.S.Guha, Regional Director, IGNOU, Ansted University Honorary Advisory Council member cum Programme Director (INDIA)

“Dear Sir. Prof. Dr. Roger Haw, Thank you for your mail inviting me to contribute to the supporting messages for the launching ceremony for promoting the 2nd CSR International Conference in Malaysia, scheduled for 29th May (Saturday) 2004. Unfortunately your message arrived when I was away for the long weekend public holiday and has just arrived today.  I am sorry that I missed submitting my contribution to the event but hopefully the launching was successful and that other members of the Ansted Family did contribute gloriously in honour of the launching of the 2nd International Conference in Malaysia.  Please accept our congratulations on you and your Oragnising Committee successful launching of the CSR Conference.

We also confirm the receipt today of the Conference Programme's brochure and the CD-ROM on International Journal on Social Responsibility Volume 1, No. 2004, just as you promised.  It is beautifully designed but we have not loaded the CD-ROM as yet.  It is a clever and wonderful way of circulating an electronic Journal. We believe that in due course, this Journal shall be a fertile ground for international contributions of diverse intellectual views on Social Responsibility.  Well Done Professor!

We took out a full gloss-colour page joint-advertisement in Amity bi-monthly Magazine that is distributed in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, West Indies, Africa and another Ansted University dedicated advertisement in the bi-weekly Newspaper distributed in the UK, W.I. and Africa, due to be published in June.  We hope to continue along these lines in the near future and test the results as we go along. I shall be in contact with you in no distant date. With regards and best wishes.”  Dr. E.C. King, Director of London Centre for Information Technology, Programme Director of Ansted University cum Advisory Council member (U.K)

“Dear Prof. Roger Haw & Prof. David Crowther, Congratulations for the excellent initiative both of you have taken to start an international journal on Social Responsibility and organize an annual International Conference on Social Responsibility. Information about the launching ceremony of these events has reached me a bit too late but I will do well not to miss the November grand conference to be held in Penang, Malaysia. Keep up the excellent work of developing Ansted University into a prominent institution of learning! Yours sincerely” By Associate Prof. Adams Bodomo, University of Hong Kong

“I have received the CSR Conference booklet and CD, quite impressive” Professor Dr William A Eydler, Ansted University Honorary Doctorate Degree Recipient (USA)

“Roger Haw, The Social Responsibility journal CD arrived yesterday (2004 June 02).  I have not had time to read it yet but I did look at your introduction.  Of course, it is great to receive a welcoming message.  It is even better to get a better view of you.  You do well on TV!  The CD packaging is done so very well.  I am pleased that your group took the added effort and expense to use a high quality CD envelope that reduces scratching of the disk surface and makes it easy to bind into any conference publication. I wish I could attend the conference but you can imagine the cost is prohibitive. I presently am readying my trip to the Philippines where I will be working on faculty development with a university seeking further accreditation.  This is a voluntary job arranged via Canada' and the Philippine's governments.  The governments cover my expenses (travel, etc.) but I do not charge my consulting fee.  The job is one way to give back to society what I have received. Best wishes to your colleagues, to your loved ones, and to you” By W. J. Karle, Ansted University Honorary Advisory Council member, Consultants in the Knowledge Age (Canada)

Good luck with it” By Professor David Birch, Director, Corporate Citizenship Research Unit, Deakin University, (Australia) and general editor, Journal of Corporate Citizenship (2005-2007)
